25 Years of Ecocem

Ecocem was founded in 2000 by Donal O’Riain, who had a vision to decarbonise cement. 

Ecocem takes the first step in its mission to build a sustainable future by opening a low-carbon cement plant in Moerdijk, Netherlands. 

Ecocem opens its 2nd low-carbon cement plant on the banks of Dublin’s famous River Liffey

Ecocem opens its 3rd plant in the French region of Fos-sur-Mer

in 2016, Ecocem opened its first import terminal in the UK in Runcorn. 

In 2017, Ecocem opened its second UK import terminal in Sheerness

2018 – Ecocem opens a second low-carbon cement plant in France, located in Dunkirk.

2021 – Ecocem opened its first Research and Innovation Centre in Champlan, France

The expansion of Ecocem’s capacity at Moerdijk will enable Ecocem to both produce and store ACT. This new site will enhance the capacity of the plant in The Netherlands and quadruple the storage capacity for key materials up to 40t.

At full capacity, ACT production in France will reach 1.9 million tonnes per year, reducing CO2 emissions by 800,000 tonnes annually and creating 60 long-term jobs in France. 

Costing over €10M, the 3300m2 facility reinforces Ecocem’s focus on developing and delivering low-carbon cement technologies capable of using a range of alternative SCMs (supplementary cementitious materials) and mineral additions to replace clinker, the carbon-intensive component in cement which is responsible for over 90% of its emissions.
