Ecocem, Europe’s leading provider of low carbon technology solutions for the cement and construction industries, today announces it is joining NEU, a Centre of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete, initiated and powered by the American Concrete Institute (ACI).
Funded by amongst others, Meta and Breakthrough Energy, the NEU Center was launched in April 2022 to spearhead the research into and adoption of carbon-neutral construction technology.
One of the NEU Board of Directors’ priorities is a validation/verification programme which will provide an independent peer review of carbon reduction technologies, conducted impartially by subject matter experts, to evaluate the accuracy of relevant technical claims related to carbon in cement and concrete. As an NEU member, Ecocem will contribute to this ambitious peer review programme.
To achieve its goal of eliminating carbon emissions from the concrete and cement industry by 2050, the NEU Center builds strategic partnerships with construction, research and manufacturing companies. These partnerships help drive the development and use of carbon-neutral materials and technology around the world.
Commenting on the news, Donal O’Riain, Founder and Group Managing Director of Ecocem, said “Joining the NEU (an ACI Center of Excellence for Carbon Neutral Concrete) is a milestone that demonstrates our commitment to pushing the science to decarbonize the cement industry by 50% by 2030.The IPCC’s recent synthesis report calls for a quantum leap in climate action and the need to achieve Net Zero by 2040 to keep 1.5°C alive. This latest report reinforces the urgent need for solutions that can deliver substantial reductions in CO2 within the decade.”
Speaking specifically on the US, Steve Bryan Ecocem’s Managing Director for the Americas said “The Inflation Reduction Act has accelerated investment and focus on low carbon technologies in the US. Organizations like the NEU can play a valuable role ensuring that low carbon claims are rigorously challenged and proven to do what they say they will. I’m optimistic that we’ll be able to develop and grow our commitment impact on the US through our partnership with NEU.”

The companies aim to co-develop and deploy a version of ACT, Ecocem’s scalable low-carbon cement technology, optimized for application by TITAN.
Responding to the UN Environment Programme’s latest report, Susan McGarry, Director of Public Affairs and Sustainability at Ecocem, looks at how the construction industry can accelerate decarbonization.
